Replacing Some Lightbulbs and Other Small Fixes
I started the week noticing the hallway light was flickering again. It had been doing that for a few days, so on Tuesday after work I stopped by the store in Harbor’s Edge to pick up some replacements. The drive over was quick, but finding the right wattage took some time because the shelves were rearranged since my last visit. The overhead fluorescents buzzed faintly overhead while I squinted at the tiny print on the boxes, and the air smelled like that mix of cardboard and cleaning solution they always seem to use. A clerk in a red vest asked if I needed help reaching something on the top shelf, but I waved her off and finally grabbed the warm-white LEDs I usually get. On the way out I paused near the garden section and almost bought a small fern before remembering how the last one had fared.

Once I got home I swapped out the bulbs in the hallway and the kitchen. That left me with a couple extras, so I decided to check the living room lamps too. Ren was in the other room on a call, so I worked around him and got everything done before dinner. The new bulbs made the rooms feel brighter right away, which was nice since the evenings are still getting darker earlier than I expect in May. I stood for a minute in the kitchen afterward, listening to the low hum of the fridge and noticing how the light caught on the edge of the countertop where a little chip had formed last winter.
On Wednesday I pulled out the toolbox to tighten a loose hinge on the bedroom closet door. It had been sticking a little whenever I opened it to grab clothes. The screws were easy to reach, and after a few turns it moved smoothly again. I also noticed one of the drawer pulls in the kitchen was wobbly, so I grabbed a screwdriver and fixed that while I was at it. Small jobs like these always seem to lead to one more thing. While I was in there I wiped a faint ring of coffee off the counter that must have been from the morning before, and the rag smelled like the lemon cleaner I keep under the sink.
Thursday evening I sorted through a box of old receipts and manuals that had piled up in the entryway closet. Most of them went straight into the recycling bin, but I kept a couple for the appliances we still use. It felt good to clear some space without committing to a full day of organizing. A couple of the paper edges were already soft from the humidity that creeps in whenever the door stays open too long, and I found an old hardware-store coupon that had expired three months ago tucked between two manuals.

By Friday I was ready for something low key. Lissa texted about meeting for coffee on Saturday morning, so I suggested the spot near the library. We caught up on her work updates and my latest client project, which involves picking out fabric for a set of dining chairs. She mentioned her cat had knocked over a plant again, which reminded me I need to move one of ours farther from the edge of the table. The coffee there always comes in those thick ceramic mugs that keep the drink warm longer than the paper ones at the chain place.
Saturday turned into a bit of a longer errand day than planned. After coffee I stopped at the pharmacy for some basics and ended up walking the aisles for almost an hour. I grabbed a new pack of batteries while I was there because the remote for the living room TV had been acting up. The total came to more than I meant to spend, but at least everything was in one place. Near the checkout I added a small pack of mints after the woman ahead of me paid with exact change in nickels and dimes, and the automatic doors whooshed open with that blast of cooler outside air.

Sunday morning Ren and I made pancakes with the last of the blueberries from the freezer. We ate them at the kitchen counter while going through the mail. Nothing exciting, just the usual bills and a catalog. Later I sat on the couch with a book I had started weeks ago and finally got through a few chapters. The butter from the pancakes left a faint shine on the counter that caught the light when I walked past later.
The rest of the weekend stayed pretty quiet. I watered the plants on the windowsill and wiped down the counters. Nothing dramatic, just the usual mix of tasks that add up by the end of the week.
