Getting the Air Filters Replaced This Week
I had been meaning to swap out the air filters for a couple weeks now. The ones in the vents were looking pretty gray, and Ren kept reminding me the unit would run better with fresh ones in. So yesterday morning I finally put it on the list and headed out after breakfast, the smell of coffee still lingering on my sweater as I grabbed my keys. The kitchen clock ticked louder than usual while I finished the last sip from my mug, the rim still warm against my thumb.
The hardware store over in Willow Creek is usually quicker than the big chain on the other side of town. I grabbed three of the 20 by 25 inch ones they keep on the end aisle, the cardboard edges rough against my fingers, plus a small pack of screws because one of the vent covers has been loose. The fluorescent lights hummed overhead while a cart squeaked past in the next aisle, its wheel catching on a loose floor tile and making a short rattle. On the way out I noticed they had seed packets near the register, so I added a couple of moonvine seeds to the basket. The directions say they do well in partial shade, which might work along the back fence where the tomatoes have been struggling, their leaves already curling a little at the edges from the afternoon heat. A small stack of potting soil bags leaned nearby, the plastic crinkling when someone brushed past them.

After that I stopped at the grocery store for milk and a few other things. The line at the deli counter moved fast, which was a surprise on a weekday, though the woman ahead of me kept checking her watch and sighing every few seconds. I got some sliced turkey and a block of cheddar for sandwiches later in the week, the paper wrapping crinkling as the clerk slid everything into a bag. A refrigerated case hummed nearby, fogging the glass just enough to blur the rows of packaged salads behind it. On the drive home I passed the usual construction on the overpass. It has been going on for months, but at least the traffic light was working this time, the orange cones still streaked with dried mud from last week’s rain. One of the workers waved a slow flag as I crept forward, the fabric snapping once in a sudden gust.
Once I got back I replaced the filters right away. It only took about ten minutes total, mostly because I had to move a couple of boxes out of the utility closet first, the dust making me sneeze twice before I could even open the vent. Ren was on a call so I left the old ones by the door to take out later, their gray surfaces soft with lint. The new ones fit without any trouble, which is always a relief, the clean white edges snapping into place with a soft click. A faint whoosh of air followed, carrying the clean scent of the cardboard frame for a moment.

In the afternoon I sat down with my laptop and cleared out some old emails. Ever since the iPhone came out back in 2006 it feels like half my day is just sorting through messages and notifications, the screen glow making my eyes tired after an hour. I also found a folder of photos from a trip we took a few years ago and moved a few of them to the external drive, pausing on one where the light hit the water just right. The laptop fan clicked on softly beneath the desk, and outside a bird landed on the windowsill, its claws tapping once before it flew off again.
Dinner was simple, just pasta with the turkey and some frozen peas. Nothing fancy, but it worked, the steam fogging the kitchen window for a minute. After we ate I took a short walk around the block to stretch my legs. The air felt a little heavy, but it was still pleasant enough, the sound of sprinklers ticking on a neighbor’s lawn mixing with distant traffic. A dog barked twice from behind a fence, then settled into a low whine as I passed. When I got home I watered the houseplants and checked the mail. Nothing much, just the usual bills and a catalog. One envelope had a slight crease along the edge, like it had been caught in the mailbox slot.

Today has been quieter so far. I have a couple of client calls this afternoon, then probably just a normal evening at home. The new filters already seem to be making a small difference with the airflow.
