A Wednesday Night at the New Sushi Spot and Some Late-Night Chats

Hey everyone, it’s been a bit of a whirlwind week with work deadlines piling up, but I managed to carve out some time last night for a much-needed date night with Ren. We decided to check out this new sushi spot that opened up a couple of blocks from our place, called Sakura Wave. It’s right off Main Street, tucked between that little boutique I always forget the name of and the CVS we hit up for last-minute snacks. The neon sign out front was hard to miss, and honestly, the smell of fresh fish and rice wafting out the door had me sold before we even stepped inside.

The place was packed for a Wednesday, which I guess is a good sign. We got lucky and snagged a small table near the back after a short wait. The menu was one of those laminated, slightly sticky kinds, but it had a ton of options. I’m not the most adventurous when it comes to raw fish, so I stuck with a classic California roll and some miso soup. Ren, on the other hand, went all in with this dragon roll that had eel and avocado piled on top. It looked way better than my safe choice, but I wasn’t about to admit that out loud. My soup was warm and salty in the best way, though I did burn my tongue on the first sip because I’m apparently incapable of patience.

We spent most of the meal catching up on random stuff. Work’s been eating up a lot of my brain space lately with a client who keeps changing their mind about paint colors. I swear, if I have to mock up one more “slightly less taupe” shade, I’m gonna lose it. Ren was telling me about their latest project at the office too, but I’ll spare you the details since I barely understood half of it myself. Somewhere between the second round of green tea and splitting a little plate of mochi, we got to talking about the upcoming Bloom Festival. If you’re local, you probably know it’s that big spring event down at Carver Park where everyone brings out their best flower arrangements and competes for weirdly specific prizes. There’s even a category for “most resilient nightpetal,” which is apparently a big deal. I don’t have the greenest thumb, but I’m thinking of entering just for the fun of it. Maybe I’ll rope Lissa into helping me pick something from the community garden.

After dinner, we weren’t quite ready to head home, so we walked a couple of streets over to this late-night tea house we’ve been meaning to try. It’s called Ember Sip, and it’s got this cozy, dimly lit vibe that’s perfect for winding down. They serve these tiny cups of brewed teas with flavors I’ve never even heard of before. I got something called duskberry blend, which tasted like a mix of black tea and something faintly sweet I couldn’t place. Ren stuck with plain jasmine, probably a smarter choice since mine was a bit too bitter by the last sip. We sat there for a good hour, just talking about nothing in particular. At one point, we started planning a little getaway for next month, maybe up to Thornvale for a long weekend. It’s only a couple of hours away, and I’ve heard they’ve got some killer hiking trails and antique shops.

Late night tea at Ember Sip, so cozy.

By the time we got home, it was way later than I’d planned. I had every intention of getting through some emails before bed, but instead, I ended up sprawled on the couch with Ren, scrolling through Netflix and not picking anything. Typical. I’ve got an early meeting tomorrow, so I’m already regretting staying out so late, but it was worth it for the break from routine. Sakura Wave is definitely on the list for a return visit, and I might even be brave enough to try something besides a California roll next time. We’ll see. For now, I’m just hoping I don’t oversleep my alarm again. Fingers crossed!
