A Wednesday Morning at the Bakery and Some Unexpected Treats
Hey everyone, I hope your week is going as smoothly as a midweek can. I wanted to pop in with a quick story about my morning because it turned out to be unexpectedly pleasant. Plus, I’ve got a little baking inspiration to share if you’re in the mood for something sweet.
So, this morning I had a rare gap in my schedule. No client calls, no urgent emails about paint swatches or fabric delays. I decided to treat myself to a trip to Hazel’s Bakery, which is just a ten-minute walk from my place. It’s one of those spots in the neighborhood that always smells like butter and sugar, and I swear their coffee is better than anything I can brew at home. I threw on a jacket since it’s still a little chilly out, grabbed my reusable mug, and headed over.
Walking in, I was hit with that warm, yeasty smell that just makes you want to buy everything in sight. The display case was packed with the usual suspects, croissants, scones, and those giant cinnamon rolls that Ren loves. But then I spotted something new. They had these little golden pastries labeled as “honeythorn twists.” I’d never heard of them before, but the baker behind the counter said they’re a spring tradition around here, made with a spiced honey glaze and some kind of local thornberry. I’m not sure what a thornberry is exactly, but I figured I’d give it a try. I got two, plus a black coffee, and settled into one of their tiny tables by the window.

Biting into the honeythorn twist was a whole experience. It was flaky and just sweet enough, with this tiny tart kick that must be from whatever thornberry is. I’m not usually one for fancy pastries, mostly because I’m terrible at making them myself, but this was worth every penny. I ended up texting Ren a picture, and they were like, “Save me one!” Sorry, babe, I ate them both. I’ll just have to go back tomorrow.
While I was sipping my coffee and people-watching, I noticed a flyer on the community board near the door. It was for the upcoming Vernal Crossing, which is apparently a big deal around town this time of year. I guess it’s some kind of early spring festival where everyone swaps handmade wreaths and there’s a big bonfire at dusk. I vaguely remember my grandmother mentioning it when I was a kid, but I haven’t been to one in forever. I think Ren and I might check it out this weekend if the weather holds up. Could be a fun way to shake off the last of winter.

Anyway, after finishing up at Hazel’s, I felt inspired to try something sweet at home. I’m not about to attempt anything as complicated as a honeythorn twist, but I did pick up some ingredients at the grocery store on the way back. I decided on making a simple lemon loaf, mostly because we had a couple of lemons sitting on the counter begging to be used. I found a recipe online that looked easy enough, even for someone like me who usually burns quick breads. It’s just flour, sugar, eggs, lemon zest, and a few other basics. I mixed it up this afternoon, and somehow the house didn’t fill with smoke. Progress! It’s cooling on the counter now, and I’m crossing my fingers it tastes half as good as it smells.

Ren got home a little while ago and immediately sniffed out the loaf. They’re already hinting at slicing into it before dinner, but I’m holding firm. We’ve got leftover spaghetti planned for tonight, and I don’t want dessert to ruin the meal. Though, knowing us, we’ll probably cave in an hour.
That’s pretty much the highlight of my Wednesday. Just a quiet morning at the bakery, a weirdly tasty pastry, and a rare baking win. If anyone knows more about this Vernal Crossing thing, drop a comment. I’d love to know what to expect. And if you’ve got a lemon loaf recipe that’s better than the one I Googled, I’m all ears. Talk soon!
