A Tuesday Night Trivia Night and Some Unexpected Laughs
Hey everyone, happy Tuesday! I’m still kind of buzzing from last night, so I thought I’d pop on here and share a little recap of our evening. Ren and I met up with Lissa and a couple of her coworkers for trivia night at a local bar called The Rusty Pint. It’s this divey little spot near downtown that I’ve mentioned before (I think in my flea market post a few weeks back?). Anyway, they do trivia every Monday, and we’ve been meaning to go for ages. Last night, we finally made it happen, and I’m so glad we did because it was a riot.
We got there around 7, just as the host was setting up. The place was packed, which I wasn’t expecting for a Monday, but I guess trivia is serious business here in town. We snagged a table near the back, ordered a pitcher of Bud Light and some nachos, and started brainstorming a team name. After some truly terrible suggestions from Ren (sorry, babe, “Quiz Khalifa” was never going to fly), we landed on “The Brainy Bunch,” which got a few laughs from the table next to us. The nachos, by the way, were surprisingly good—super cheesy with just the right amount of jalapeños. I might have eaten half the plate myself. No regrets.
The trivia started with some easy stuff—movie quotes, basic history, that kind of thing. I was feeling pretty confident because I nailed a question about the capital of Brazil (Brasília, in case you’re wondering). But then they hit us with a round on “Vintage Tech,” and I swear, we were all clueless. Like, who remembers the name of the first flip phone? Not me. Ren kept insisting it was something called a “ClamShell 3000,” which was obviously wrong, but he said it with such conviction that we wrote it down anyway. Spoiler: It wasn’t right. The whole table was cracking up at how sure he was, though.
Halfway through the night, they did this weird little intermission thing called the “Copper Call,” which I guess is a tradition at The Rusty Pint. Everyone stands up, clinks their glasses, and shouts out a quick toast to “the old wires.” I’m not entirely sure what it means—something about the city’s history with telegraph lines, maybe?—but it was kind of fun to be part of it. Lissa got way too into it and nearly spilled her beer, which just made us laugh harder.
The second half of trivia was brutal. There was a whole round on botany, and I thought I’d at least get something right since I’m always messing with my houseplants. Nope. They asked about the flowering cycle of a plant called “moonpetal,” and I just stared at the paper like it was written in another language. I mean, I’ve never even heard of moonpetal, but apparently, it only blooms under specific lunar conditions? I don’t know, we guessed “every full moon,” and I’m pretty sure we were wrong. If anyone out there knows, enlighten me in the comments.
By the end of the night, we came in dead last, which was honestly fine because we were having too much fun to care. The winning team got a gift card to a local diner, and we got… well, a lot of good stories. After the game, we stuck around for another round of drinks, and I tried a seasonal cider they had on tap. It was apple-cinnamon something, and it tasted like fall in a glass, even though it’s basically spring now. I’m not usually a cider person, but I’d order it again.
Driving home, Ren and I couldn’t stop rehashing the night. We kept bringing up Lissa’s terrible guess for a 90s song lyric—she swore it was “I’ll be there for you” by The Backstreet Boys instead of The Rembrandts. Like, come on, Lissa, it’s the Friends theme song! We were still giggling about it when we pulled into the driveway. I’m already looking forward to the next trivia night—maybe we’ll even study up a little. Or not. Half the fun is being totally unprepared.
Anyway, that’s my little Monday night story. It’s the kind of thing that reminds me how much I love these small, silly moments with friends. Work’s been hectic lately (I’ve got a big client meeting tomorrow about a living room redesign), so nights like this are the perfect reset. What about you all? Do you have a go-to weeknight activity that just lifts your mood? Drop me a comment—I’d love to hear about it. I’m off to make some tea and maybe scroll Netflix for a bit before bed. Talk soon!
