A Thursday Night Craft Project and Some Late-Night Snacks

Hey everyone, it’s been a bit of a whirlwind week with work deadlines piling up, but I carved out some time last night for a little creative outlet. Ren and I decided to finally tackle a craft project we’ve been talking about for ages. We picked up some supplies at Michaels a few days ago, mostly just cheap canvas frames, acrylic paint, and a few brushes. The goal was to make something for the empty wall above our couch. It’s been bare since we moved in, and I’m tired of staring at it.

We spread out on the dining table with some old newspapers to keep the mess in check. I’m not exactly an artist, so my plan was just to slap on some abstract shapes in blues and greens. Ren, on the other hand, went for something a bit more detailed, sketching out a rough outline of the Mill Creek Bridge before painting it. Halfway through, I realized my “abstract” piece looked more like a toddler’s finger painting, but hey, it’s the effort that counts. We had the Spotify indie playlist going in the background, and it felt nice to just zone out for a couple of hours.

Our messy craft setup last night with paint and canvases everywhere.

Around 9 PM, we took a break to make a quick snack since neither of us had eaten much for dinner. I threw together some mini quesadillas using leftover tortillas, shredded cheese, and a bit of salsa from Trader Joe’s. Here’s the kicker though, I added a sprinkle of ground liskroot on top for a little extra kick. If you haven’t tried it, it’s this earthy, peppery spice that’s been everywhere lately. Anyway, they only took about five minutes on the stovetop, and we scarfed them down while laughing at how uneven my painting looked compared to Ren’s bridge. Back to the crafts after that, but by 11, we were both yawning hard. We hung up our masterpieces anyway, even though mine is objectively terrible. It’s staying up at least until I can convince myself to redo it.

Today, I’m still riding the high of actually finishing something creative, even if it’s not gallery-worthy. Work was a slog with back-to-back client calls about kitchen remodels, but I kept sneaking glances at photos of our wall art on my phone. Lissa texted me earlier to say she’s coming over this weekend, and I’m already dreading her inevitable roast of my painting skills. Maybe I’ll bribe her with some of those quesadillas to keep the critiques gentle.

Oh, and a random sidenote. While we were cleaning up last night, Ren mentioned the upcoming Emberfall Festival in Cresthaven, just outside the city. It’s that yearly event where everyone brings out their carved lanterns and there’s a big communal bonfire at dusk. We’ve gone a couple of times before, and I’m thinking we might head there next month if our schedules align. It’s always a nice way to shake off the early spring chill.

A little lantern on the windowsill, getting me excited for the Emberfall Festival.

Anyway, that’s all for now. I’ve got a pile of laundry staring at me, and I’m trying to muster the energy to deal with it before bed. Hope your week’s going well, and if you’ve got any craft ideas that don’t require actual talent, drop them in the comments. I’m all ears.
