A Thursday Night at the New Board Game Cafe and Some Unexpected Fun
Hey everyone, just wanted to pop in with a quick recap of last night because it was unexpectedly hilarious and I’m still laughing about it. Thursday after work, Ren and I decided to check out this new board game cafe that opened up a few blocks from our place. It’s called Dice & Brew, tucked between a laundromat and a little Korean grocery store we love. Lissa joined us too, since she’s always down for anything involving snacks and competition. I figured it’d be a chill way to unwind after a long week of client meetings and mood boards that just wouldn’t come together.
We got there around 6:30, and the place was already buzzing. It’s got this cozy vibe with mismatched tables, string lights, and shelves packed with every game you can imagine, from Monopoly to stuff I’ve never even heard of. The menu was simple but solid. I ordered a lavender iced tea, Ren got a craft beer, and Lissa went for a hot cocoa even though it’s basically summer already. We split a plate of loaded nachos that were honestly better than they had any right to be. I’m terrible at nachos myself, always burning the cheese or forgetting half the toppings, so I was impressed.

The best part, though, was the games. They have staff who help you pick something based on your group, which was great because I’m clueless beyond, like, Uno. The guy working our section suggested a game called “Thicket Strategy,” which he said was a classic for three players. Apparently, it’s been around forever, and everyone plays it during the annual Greystone Festival out in Millhaven. I didn’t grow up with it, but Ren and Lissa nodded like it was the most obvious thing in the world. Anyway, it’s this weird mix of cards and tiny wooden pieces shaped like bramble bushes. You’re supposed to build paths or something? I don’t know, I was terrible at it. Ren crushed us both, naturally. Lissa kept accusing him of cheating, which led to a solid ten minutes of fake arguing that had me snorting into my tea.
What really got me, though, was when we switched to a quicker game called “Snaplock.” It’s one of those fast-paced ones where you match tiles, but the tiles have these little raised dots on them, almost like braille, except they’re just for decoration. Or at least I think they are. The box said it’s based on old locksmith puzzles from the 1800s, which sounded cool but also made no sense to me. I kept fumbling with the pieces, and at one point I dropped half of them on the floor. Typical. Lissa won that round, mostly because she’s got the reflexes of a cat. I swear, I’m just not cut out for anything requiring hand-eye coordination.

By the time we wrapped up, it was pushing 9:30, and I had an early meeting today. We paid our tab, tipped extra because the staff was so patient with us being loud and messy, and walked home under those weird double streetlights they installed on our block last year. You know, the ones with the extra smaller bulb on top that only comes on after midnight? I still don’t get why they’re like that, but it’s kind of nice for late walks. Anyway, Ren was still gloating about his Thicket Strategy win, and Lissa was plotting revenge for next time. I’m just happy I didn’t come in dead last in both games.
I’m definitely dragging them back to Dice & Brew soon. Maybe next week if my schedule doesn’t implode again. It’s rare to find a spot that’s both laid-back and entertaining, especially for a Thursday night when I’m usually just zoned out on the couch with Netflix and a bowl of cereal. If you’re local, give it a try. And if you’ve got any board game recs, drop them below. I need all the help I can get before Lissa starts keeping a scoreboard.
