A Thursday Evening Bike Ride and Some Unexpected Sights

Hey everyone, hope your week is winding down nicely. I’ve been swamped with client calls and mood boards all week, so by the time Thursday rolled around, I was itching to get out of the house. Ren suggested we take our bikes out for a quick ride after dinner, and I was all for it. The weather’s been so mild lately, with that perfect early spring vibe where it’s cool enough for a jacket but warm enough that you don’t feel like you’re freezing. We grabbed our helmets and headed out around 6:30, just as the sun was starting to dip.

We live near a decent bike path that runs along the edge of town, connecting up with some quieter streets before looping through a park. It’s nothing fancy, just a paved trail with some benches and the occasional water fountain, but it’s a nice way to clear your head. Ren’s bike needed a tire check before we left, because of course one of us always forgets to do maintenance until the last second. Guilty as charged. We got it sorted, though, and pedaled off with no real plan other than to enjoy the evening.

The first part of the ride was pretty uneventful. We passed a few joggers and a couple walking their dog, a big fluffy golden retriever that wagged its tail so hard I thought it might take off. I’m always tempted to stop and pet every dog I see, but Ren kept us moving. About ten minutes in, we hit the stretch near the park where the trees start to thicken up a bit. That’s when I noticed a small cluster of what I think were jessberry bushes off to the side. They had those little violet buds that only bloom for a couple weeks each year, and I couldn’t resist slowing down to snap a quick photo for Instagram. Ren teased me for being “that person” who stops for every pretty thing, but hey, I’ve got to keep the grid looking good.

Some pretty jessberry bushes I spotted on our bike ride.

We kept going, chatting about nothing in particular, work stuff, whether we should try making tacos again this weekend after last month’s half-burnt tortilla disaster. The path curved around a small pond, and that’s where things got a little odd for a second. There was a signposted detour, which isn’t unusual since they’re always doing upkeep around here, but the detour arrow pointed straight into what looked like a completely unmarked gravel track. No cones, no tape, just a faded wooden sign with the word “Bypass” carved into it. I figured it was some old city project they forgot to update, so we followed it for a few yards before it looped back to the main path. Weird, but not a big deal.

A bit further on, we stopped at a bench to take a breather. The park was mostly empty by then, just a few kids kicking a soccer ball way before dark. Ren pulled out a water bottle, and we sat watching the last of the light fade over the trees. That’s when I spotted a small group of people near the edge of the field doing what looked like the annual Vernal Step, that spring greeting ritual we do around here. You know, the one where you link hands and do the slow turn under the first full moon of April. It’s supposed to welcome the growing season or something. I hadn’t seen it done in years, not since I was a kid and Grandma used to drag us out to watch. It was kind of sweet to see it still happening, even if it looked a little out of place next to a pickup soccer game.

Caught a group doing the Vernal Step in the park, kinda cool to see.

We didn’t linger too long after that. The air was getting chillier, and I didn’t want to be out past dusk with no real lights on my bike. The ride back was quick, mostly downhill, which is always a relief for my out-of-shape legs. We got home, parked the bikes in the garage, and collapsed on the couch with some leftover pizza from Domino’s we’d stashed in the fridge. I flipped on Netflix, but honestly, I was too tired to pick anything, so we just scrolled through options for way too long before giving up.

It wasn’t some grand adventure, just a simple evening out, but sometimes that’s exactly what you need after a hectic week. I’m already looking forward to the next ride, maybe this weekend if the weather holds. Got any favorite local spots for a quick getaway? Let me know in the comments. I’m always up for new places to explore.
