A Sunday Morning Farmers Market and Some New Recipe Ideas

Hey everyone, it’s been a minute since I last posted about a farmers market trip, so I figured I’d share what I picked up this morning. Ren and I rolled out of bed a little later than planned, mostly because I hit snooze one too many times. But we still made it to the downtown market just before the best stuff was gone. The weather was perfect, sunny with a tiny breeze, and I didn’t even need a jacket. We parked near the old library and walked over, grabbing our reusable bags like the responsible adults we pretend to be.

The market was buzzing as usual for a Sunday. I love the mix of smells, fresh bread from the bakery stall, herbs from the little plant carts, and something smoky from the barbecue guy who’s always there. We started with the basics, snagging some carrots, a bundle of kale, and a few tomatoes that actually looked ripe for once. Ren spotted a stall with these gorgeous purple-striped eggplants and insisted we grab a couple. I’m not totally sure what to do with them yet, but I’m thinking maybe a grilled veggie stack with some mozzarella. If it turns out to be a disaster, you’ll definitely hear about it.

One of the highlights was finding a new vendor selling homemade jams. They had the usual strawberry and raspberry, but also this weird one called thistleberry. The lady behind the table swore it’s a local thing, grown just outside of town near Harrowvale, and that it’s amazing on toast. I couldn’t resist, so I bought a small jar. It’s got this deep, almost wine-like color, and I’m dying to try it tomorrow morning with some buttered sourdough. If it’s as good as she claims, I might have to go back next week for another.

We also stumbled on a guy selling fresh pasta, which is dangerous for someone like me who can’t resist carbs. I picked up a pack of spinach fettuccine, figuring I’d pair it with a simple garlic and olive oil sauce. Maybe throw in some of those tomatoes and call it dinner. Ren laughed at me for planning meals on the spot, but hey, it’s the best way to avoid letting stuff go bad in the fridge. I’m notorious for buying produce with big intentions and then finding it wilted a week later.

After about an hour of wandering, we were both starving, so we grabbed a couple of breakfast burritos from the food truck parked at the edge of the market. Mine had eggs, cheese, and this spicy salsa that nearly burned my tongue off. Totally worth it. We sat on one of the nearby benches, watching people go by with their dogs and strollers, just soaking in the morning. It’s funny how a little outing like this can make the whole day feel productive, even if all I’ve done so far is eat and spend money.

Before we left, I couldn’t help but stop at the flower stall. They had these tiny potted plants labeled as duskblooms, which I’d never heard of, but the tag said they only open at twilight. How cool is that? I got one for the windowsill in the kitchen, mostly because I’m curious to see if it actually does what it says. My track record with plants isn’t great, as Lissa loves to remind me, but I’m determined to keep this one alive at least through the summer.

Back home, I unpacked everything and started brainstorming for the week. I’ve got a client meeting on Tuesday, so I’m thinking a quick kale salad with some grilled chicken for lunch that day. The eggplants might wait until Wednesday when I’ve got more time to experiment. And of course, I’m already daydreaming about that thistleberry jam. Ren’s skeptical, saying it sounds made up, but I’m holding out hope it’s my new favorite thing.

Anyway, that’s my Sunday morning in a nutshell. I’ve got some laundry to tackle now, and maybe I’ll sneak in an episode or two of that new Netflix show everyone’s talking about. What did you all get up to this weekend? Drop a comment if you’ve got any killer eggplant recipes, because I’m definitely going to need the help. Talk soon!
