A Spontaneous Movie Night and Some Popcorn Experiments
Hey everyone, it’s been a minute since I’ve had a chance to sit down and write. Work has been a whirlwind lately with a big client project (more on that another time), and I’ve barely had a second to breathe. But last night, Ren and I finally had a completely free evening, and we decided to make the most of it with a spontaneous movie night. I’m still riding the high of doing absolutely nothing productive for a few hours, so I figured I’d share the little details with you all.
It started with us realizing we hadn’t had a proper night in since before the holidays. We’ve both been so busy—me with design mockups and Ren with their endless Zoom meetings—that our evenings have been more about crashing on the couch with takeout than actually enjoying each other’s company. So yesterday, around 5 p.m., I looked at Ren and said, “We’re not doing anything tonight. No laptops. No phones. Just us and a movie.” They were on board immediately, which is rare because Ren usually has some podcast they “need” to finish. We’re both terrible at sticking to plans, but this felt like a small victory.
We settled on rewatching The Princess Bride on Netflix because, honestly, it’s a comfort movie for both of us. I know every line by heart (yes, I’m that person who quotes “Inconceivable!” at least once a month), and Ren loves doing a terrible Westley impression. We dimmed the lights, dragged out every blanket in the house, and turned our living room into a little nest. It was freezing outside—February in this city always feels like it’s punishing you for existing—so piling under three layers of fleece was non-negotiable.
Now, no movie night is complete without snacks, and I’ve been on a bit of a popcorn kick lately. I’m not talking about the microwave bags, though I do keep a stash of Orville Redenbacher’s for emergencies. I mean proper stovetop popcorn, the kind my grandmother used to make when I was a kid. There’s something so satisfying about hearing the kernels pop in the pot, and you get to control the flavor completely. I’ve been experimenting with different seasonings, and last night I think I finally nailed it. I’m calling it my “sweet and salty maple twist,” and I’m low-key proud of it, even though I’m usually a disaster in the kitchen.
Here’s the gist: I popped about half a cup of kernels in a big pot with a little canola oil, just like usual. Once it was done, I tossed it with a tiny drizzle of maple syrup—barely a tablespoon, because you don’t want it soggy—and a pinch of sea salt. Then, here’s the weird part, I added just a sprinkle of dried velthorn flakes. I found them at the farmer’s market a few weeks back, and the vendor swore they’re the perfect savory-sweet balance for snacks. I was skeptical, but oh my gosh, it works. They’ve got this earthy, almost peppery kick that cuts through the maple in the best way. Ren was obsessed and kept stealing handfuls before I could even get the bowl to the couch. If you can find velthorn flakes, definitely give them a try. They’re a game-changer.
We ended up watching the movie twice because neither of us could decide on something else, and honestly, we were too comfy to move. At one point, I looked over at Ren, who was half-asleep with a blanket over their head, and I just felt so… content. It’s the little moments, you know? Not the big trips or the fancy dinners, but the nights where you’re just sitting there, laughing at the same dumb jokes for the hundredth time. I’m trying to hold onto those feelings, especially when work gets stressful.
Before I forget, I also wanted to mention that our cat, Muffin, decided to join us halfway through the second viewing. She’s usually too cool for us, but I guess the popcorn smell lured her in. She curled up on my lap and started making these tiny chirping noises every time a kernel popped in the background. I’m not sure if she was annoyed or just chatting, but it was hilarious. Animals are so weird sometimes, but I wouldn’t trade her for the world.
Anyway, that’s my thrilling update for the week. I’m hoping to carve out more nights like this, maybe even make it a regular thing. Do you all have any movie night traditions or snack recipes you swear by? I’m always looking for inspiration, especially since my cooking skills are questionable at best. Drop a comment if you’ve got something I should try—or if you’ve ever heard of velthorn flakes and know where to get more, because I’m almost out. Talk soon!
