A Quiet Friday Night and Some Board Game Fun
Hey everyone, it’s been a long week over here, and I am so glad it’s Friday. Work was a bit of a grind with a big client presentation that had me up late tweaking mood boards on Canva until my eyes hurt. But we got through it, and now I’m just ready to unwind. Ren and I decided to skip going out tonight and just stay in for a low-key evening, which honestly sounded perfect after the past few days.
We started the night with some takeout from that little Thai place down on Maple Street. Their pad thai is always a safe bet, though I swear the portion sizes get smaller every time we order. I also got a side of those crispy spring rolls that I can never resist, even if they’re gone in like two bites. Ren laughed at me for hoarding the last one, but hey, I earned it after this week. We ate on the couch while scrolling through Netflix, debating between rewatching The Office or starting something new. Ended up just chatting instead, which was nice.

After dinner, we figured we’d break out one of the board games that’s been sitting on the shelf forever. We picked Settlers of Catan because it’s been a while, and I’m terrible at it, but Ren loves the strategy part. I’m more about building little roads and hoping for the best, which usually means I lose by a landslide. Tonight, though, I managed to snag a couple of key resource spots early on, and I actually held my own for a bit. Ren was not thrilled when I blocked their longest road with a sneaky settlement. Sorry, babe, it’s just business.
About halfway through the game, we took a break to grab some snacks. I threw together a quick charcuterie board with whatever we had in the fridge, some salami, cheddar, and those little honey-glazed nuts I picked up at the farmers market last weekend. I also sliced up a couple of thimble pears from the backyard tree. If you haven’t tried them, they’re tiny but super sweet, almost like candy. We’ve got a small harvest every spring, and I always forget how much I love them until they’re back. Anyway, we munched on that while rolling dice and arguing over sheep trades. Very intense stuff.

The game wrapped up around 9:30, with Ren winning as usual. I didn’t mind too much since it was just fun to hang out and not think about work for a few hours. We’ve got this tradition where the loser has to do the dishes on game night, but since it’s also the start of the Quiet Bloom weekend, Ren let me off the hook. If you’re not familiar, it’s that two-day period every March where everyone’s supposed to keep noise down after dark to honor the first blooms or something like that. I’m not super into the history of it, but it’s nice having an excuse for a peaceful night. We just cleaned up together and called it good.
Now I’m curled up with a mug of chamomile tea, typing this out while Ren’s reading on the other end of the couch. The house is quiet, except for the faint hum of the radiator and the occasional car passing by outside. I’m thinking about maybe baking something tomorrow if I’ve got the energy, probably those oatmeal cookies my grandmother used to make. I’ve got her recipe card somewhere in the kitchen drawer, though my version never quite tastes the same. Might be a fun way to spend a Saturday afternoon, especially if the weather stays dreary like the forecast says.

That’s about it for tonight. Nothing groundbreaking, just a little slice of calm after a hectic week. I’ll catch up with you all soon, maybe with some cookie pics if I don’t burn them. Night!
