A Quick Grocery Run and Breakfast Experiments
I stopped by the store on Wednesday afternoon after work wrapped up early. The parking lot was pretty empty for once, which made it easy to get in and out with just a few things. I needed oats, eggs, and some fruit for the rest of the week. Usually I stick to the same rotation but this time I grabbed a few extras on impulse. The automatic doors whooshed open with that familiar blast of cool air that always smells faintly like the bakery section even though it’s all the way at the back. I grabbed a cart that only wobbled a little on the left wheel and headed straight for the produce, where the strawberries looked a little tired under the lights but the blueberries still had that dusty bloom on them that means they’re fresh. I tossed a couple of pints in along with a bunch of bananas that were just starting to freckle.

Ren had mentioned wanting something different for breakfast, so I looked for ideas in the cereal aisle. They had that new starfruit granola in stock, the one with the little dried pieces mixed in. I added a bag to the cart along with a carton of almond milk and a pack of English muffins. On the way to the checkout I also picked up some spinach and a couple of avocados that looked decent. The avocados were just soft enough under my thumb that I knew they’d be ready by morning without being mushy. I lingered a minute near the yogurt because the vanilla kind was on sale two-for-one, and even though I didn’t strictly need it I added one anyway after checking the expiration date twice. At the self-checkout the scanner beeped happily for everything except the granola bag, which needed a quick override from the attendant who looked about as tired as I felt.
The drive home took me past Crestview Terrace. It’s quicker than going the long way around the main road, especially with the afternoon traffic. Kids were out riding bikes in the cul-de-sac and someone’s sprinkler was arcing across the sidewalk, leaving little rainbows in the sunlight. I got back and unloaded everything while Ren finished up a call. We ended up making a simple version of avocado toast with the muffins and some scrambled eggs on the side. The English muffins toasted up with those perfect little pockets that catch the butter, and I mashed the avocado with a fork right in the bowl so it stayed chunky. I threw in a handful of the granola on top of the yogurt I had left over from yesterday. It was better than I expected, actually, the crunch worked well with the soft eggs. Ren came in halfway through and stole a bite of the toast, declaring the starfruit pieces “weird but good” before heading back to wrap up the call.

Later that evening I watered the plants in the living room. The pothos is still doing fine but one of the smaller ones near the window keeps dropping leaves. I might need to move it again. The soil felt dry and crumbly under my fingers, and a couple of the dropped leaves were already curling at the edges from sitting on the windowsill too long. We watched an episode of a show we started last month and then called it a night early since the week has been nonstop with client revisions. Ren kept pausing to check something on their phone, but we still managed to finish the episode without too many interruptions.
This morning I tried the granola again, just with milk this time. It held up okay without getting too soggy. The starfruit pieces stayed pleasantly chewy instead of turning to mush, and the almond milk gave everything a light nuttiness that paired well with the coffee I had already poured. I think I’ll add it to the regular list for now. The rest of the day is mostly emails and a quick call with a supplier about fabric samples. Nothing too exciting, but the breakfast change was a small win.
