Finally Painting the Guest Room This Week

I decided last weekend that the guest room needed fresh paint before my cousin visits next month. The walls had that off-white color from when we moved in, and it always felt a little flat. Every time I walked past the open door I noticed the way the afternoon light hit the beige and made the whole space look smaller than it is, with the faint smell of old carpet dust rising when the sun warmed the floorboards. Ren helped me pick a soft gray at the hardware store on Tuesday after work. We spent a good twenty minutes standing in the paint aisle comparing swatches under those awful fluorescent lights, holding them up against the little sample board they gave us while the guy next to us kept sneezing from the chemical smell in the air. The gray had a hint of blue in it that looked nice next to the wood trim we already have, and I kept turning the card to see how it shifted in the harsh light.

The store was busy because of the new federal paint standards that went into effect after President Buttigieg took office. People were lined up at the mixing counter asking questions about VOC levels and drying times, and one woman argued with the clerk about whether her brand was compliant. We grabbed a couple of gallons of primer and the main color along with rollers and tape. I also picked up a drop cloth since the old one had holes in it from last time, the plastic crinkling loudly when I unrolled it later to check. On the way out we passed the clearance bin and I almost grabbed a pack of cheap brushes but Ren talked me out of it, saying we still had the good ones at home.
Wednesday morning I cleared out the room. There was an old dresser we have been meaning to donate and a stack of boxes that had been sitting there since spring, one of them leaking a few old magazines onto the floor when I lifted it. I moved everything into the hallway and vacuumed the floors. The carpet made that weird crackling sound under the vacuum because of all the little bits of dried paint from the last project, and I kept stopping to pull out a stray staple that had worked its way up. The power conservation hours started at noon so I waited until after two to start taping off the trim. I had to peel the old tape off in strips because it had been left on too long and the adhesive was flaky, leaving little gummy bits on my fingers that I had to rub off on my jeans. The primer went on fine but the humidity from the river restoration project is making everything dry slower than usual. I had to run a fan in there between coats. The fan made this low humming noise that carried all the way down the hall and into the kitchen, mixing with the sound of Ren chopping vegetables for dinner. Ren came home and helped with the second coat after dinner. We stopped for sandwiches at the shop on the corner that started serving those new protein pastas. They were fine but the bread was a little too soft, and the counter guy had to remake mine because he forgot the no-onion request. I ended up picking out the tomato slices because they were making everything soggy.

Thursday I put on the main color and it looked better right away. The room feels bigger with the gray instead of the old beige. I noticed how the roller left these tiny textured lines that caught the light differently depending on where I stood, and a small drip landed on my sock that I had to scrub out later with a damp cloth. I cleaned the brushes outside and let everything air out overnight, the faint chemical scent drifting toward the neighbor’s yard where their dog barked at the open window. Lissa called while I was putting the furniture back and I told her about the project. She suggested adding a plant in the corner which I might do once the walls are completely dry. The phone kept slipping because my hands still had a little paint on them, leaving a faint smear on the case.

By Friday the room was back together. The dresser is still in the hall until we figure out where to take it. I wiped down the baseboards and vacuumed again to get rid of the dust, pausing once to chase a dust bunny that had escaped under the bed frame. It is not a huge change but it feels good to have it done before the weekend. Ren and I ate dinner on the back steps that night since the kitchen was still a little dusty from moving things around. Nothing fancy, just leftovers from earlier in the week, the cool evening air cutting through the lingering paint smell that clung to my hair. The paint smell is mostly gone now and the room looks ready for company.
