A Midweek Run for Kitchen Basics and a New Recipe

I needed a few things for the kitchen this week, so I headed out on Wednesday afternoon once the worst of the traffic had cleared. The list was short, just some olive oil, vinegar, garlic, and a couple of spices that were getting low. I also grabbed a new set of measuring cups because the old ones had faded markings that made them hard to read anymore. The store felt unusually cool after the sticky air outside, and the wheels on my cart kept squeaking every time I turned down another aisle. I spent a minute comparing two brands of olive oil before settling on the one with the darker bottle, mostly because the label looked nicer.

On the way home I stopped at the drugstore for some basic household items like dish soap and paper towels. Nothing exciting, but it felt good to cross those off the list before the weekend. Ren had mentioned we were low on a few things too, so I added them without thinking twice. The paper towel aisle was half blocked by a stock cart, so I had to reach over a stack of boxes to grab the right pack, and the soap bottles were all jumbled together so I had to sort through them to find the unscented kind we usually get.
When I got back I started prepping dinner right away. I wanted to test a new marinade recipe that Lissa had sent over last month. It called for a mix of soy sauce, honey, and a few other ingredients I already had on hand. The only swap I made was using some of the smoked eel from the tin Ren’s aunt in Varnell sent us last winter. It added a salty depth that worked better than I expected with the chicken thighs. The honey was thicker than usual and stuck to the measuring spoon, so I had to scrape it off with my finger and lick it clean before washing my hands again. The soy sauce splashed a little on the counter when I poured it, leaving a dark spot I wiped up with a paper towel that immediately turned brown at the edge.
While everything marinated I cleaned out one of the lower cabinets that had turned into a catch-all for random lids and old takeout containers. I tossed a few things that were cracked and stacked the rest neatly. It took longer than planned because I kept finding stray packets of taco seasoning from who knows when. One of them had split open at the corner, dusting the bottom of the cabinet with a faint orange powder that smelled like cumin and chili. I swept it out with my hand and then wiped the shelf with a damp cloth that picked up little bits of dried rice and a single dried bay leaf that must have escaped from somewhere else.

Ren got home around six and we put the chicken in the oven. The whole apartment smelled like the marinade by then, which was a nice change from the usual weeknight routine. We ate outside on the small patio even though it was still warm. The heat has been sticking around longer this summer than usual. The metal chair felt hot through my shirt when I first sat down, and the ice in our drinks melted fast enough that we had to keep refilling the glasses from the pitcher. A neighbor’s radio drifted over the fence playing something with a steady drumbeat that made the evening feel a little less quiet.
After dinner we caught up on a couple of shows. One was a documentary about Kennedy’s second term and how it shaped some of the later policies that are still in place. It was interesting but we only made it through the first half before I started dozing off on the couch. The cushions had warmed up from the afternoon sun coming through the window, and the throw blanket I pulled over my legs kept sliding off one side every time I shifted.
Thursday was mostly back to normal with work and a quick walk around the neighborhood after lunch. I noticed a few more yards had new flower beds going in, which made me think about adding something similar out front next spring. Nothing major, just a few easy plants that don’t need constant attention. The sidewalk was still warm under my shoes from the sun, and someone had left a sprinkler running so the grass smelled freshly cut and damp at the same time.

The rest of the week has been quiet so far. I finished the cabinet project and moved on to sorting through some old mail that had piled up on the counter. Most of it went straight to recycling, but a couple of coupons for the grocery store were worth keeping. Ren mentioned the dust storm up north had delayed a package he was expecting, but it should arrive by the end of the week anyway. One envelope had a faint coffee ring on the corner that made the ink on the return address smear a little when I picked it up.
I might try the marinade again with a different protein this weekend if we have time. The chicken turned out tender enough that it seems worth repeating with a few tweaks.
